Something from nothing

Writer's picture: ahmad fadhil Martaahmad fadhil Marta

I went to Oostende in West-Flanders, Belgium with my Host Family. We arrived there at 3 January 2018, and my first impression about this city is that it doesn't have much to be photographed.

It was until we went to the beach,  And it was pretty much flat with a blowing hard wind blowing, cold, oh and if you like sand this is the perfect place (the sand is flying everywhere). Beside the hard wind and the bad sand, it reminds me of Pantai Panjang in Bengkulu, Indonesia which also has the same geographic characteristic.

The flatness of bengkulu's beach

It took me a while to get an idea how to turn this disastrous condition into a lovely photograph. It was until i saw the nothingness in the see, it was pretty grey with brown water. And that give me an idea to capture that nothingness. I immediately grab my tripod, put on my camera, grab the filter, and set the composition. It was a hell of a preparing because of the sand and the blowing wind (yet i manage to get my tripod steady and still). I was using 18-140 mm just to get the picture of the water and the sky and was using CPL filter to add some glare from the water and GND to neutralize the slightly brighter sky.

Something from nothing

F22, 4S, ISO 100 And that is the picture after being edited in Photoshop. Basically i just make it over exposed and pull down the shadow so the brown water can be seen, and just do some experiment with other aspects.

I really love this photo, it has the soft look and some sort of calm and still feel to the viewer. this photo also shows the condition when i took the photograph

I think that's it for this post, let's see where I'm gonna go next.
